A Spokesperson for the Nairobi police said that during the shootout, which took place in the parking lot that is shared by the Holiday Inn Hotel and the Mayfair Casino. 3 men the police think were on their way to rob the casino and 2 people employed by the casino were killed.
Kenya's capital has been nicknamed Nairobbery by local residents because of all the violent crimes that take place around the city. The government is trying to curb all the violence, and the police are having some success but the going is very slow.
If not for the speed of the security guards from the holiday inn and the casino shutting the security screens as soon as they herd the shooting there may have been more casualties, according to the general manager of the Holiday Inn.
The casino is in a residential area close to several shopping malls and some upscale homes.
Kenya is still in the process of recovering from instability after accusations of vote tampering arose after the last presidential elections in December. Kenya has been hard hit by poverty, corruption and rabid violence in recent years.
Rioting and violence broke out after the elections and an estimated 1,300 people were killed and hundreds of thousands had become refuges until the fighting finally came to an end.
Due to all the violence it is estimated that Kenya lost as much as 1 billion dollars of much needed money from tourism due to the violence.
